Prior to the demolition, the railway announced the removal of encroachments through loudspeakers in the settlement on Thursday. This triggered panic among the residents. Over the past four years, more than 200 houses and numerous shops have been demolished for development purposes in Gumti Basti since the commencement of the third line project. Some of these settlements had existed for 40 to 50 years. A similar anti-encroachment drive is planned for Tatanagar station, covering the area from Gudri Bazar to Khasmahal Chowk and up to the Running Room on Kitadih Road. This is part of the station's redevelopment project. The South Eastern Railway General Manager has announced that even leaseholders will be removed and relocated. The expansion of the station's second gate requires removing encroachments, including those of leaseholders, from the Burmamines area to the Malgodam bend. However, a pending court case is hindering the railway's action.

This has led to delays of up to 5 hours for the Tatanagar-Itwari Express, affecting hundreds of passengers. The Tatanagar station's redevelopment plan includes adding three platforms to address the issue of limited lines and the need to park empty coaches at Chaibasa and Bahalda.
