The model name stands for broad gauge (W), Diesel (D), AC Current (A), Passenger (P) and 5000 Horsepower(5). The locomotive can deliver 5500HP in electric mode and 4500HP in diesel mode.
click hereThe new locomotive has been christened as the WDAP-5. The first such loco of the new class (with road number 71000) has been allotted to Kazipet Loco Shed of South Central Railway in Telangana. Interestingly Kazipet is among the few locations in India which has facility to maintain both Diesel and Electric locos.
Practical usage of this locomotive can be seen in trains going from Secunderabad towards Pune/Mumbai as the section beyond Wadi till Daund is unelectrified. Similarly, trains towards Parli, Aurangabad and Shirdi can run on the electric traction till Vikarabad and then switch over to diesel motive power without change of locomotive, thus saving at least 15 minutes in addition to saving of loco usage, manpower usage and reducing line usage.
This dual traction loco will soon be dispatched from DLW in Varanasi. SCR will test this loco at its Kazipet shed. Both DLW & SCR have to report dispatch, testing & commissioning details to the Railway Board.
